Women’s History Month – Sophie Green

What do you do?

I work as a commercial artist producing illustrations, art and designs to commission. I also have a studio and retail space in MerseyMade where I get to play with design and sell my colourful work.

What is your favourite thing about working in the creative industry?

As a freelance artist I like the freedom it gives me to order my days and be my own boss. I keep a structure where commissioned work and the dreaded admin is concerned but creativity strikes at all hours of the day so I can really work when I’m inspired, although it’s what I’d want to do anyway so it doesn’t really feel like work!

What has been the biggest challenge in your career so far?

Jumping from the 9 to 5 job, it’s a big leap and at the time I did it I really wasn’t sure I’d make it, or if anyone would like my work and want to commission me, I’d just arrived in Liverpool so had to build all my connections, get to all the exhibitions, and network.

Who is the most inspirational woman to you? Did they inspire you to pursue a creative career?

My wife was a big inspiration back in the early stages of our relationship. She knew I wasn’t happy in my day job as a graphic designer and encouraged me to pick up the paintbrush and paint - anything! She’d just started her own company and I began to meet lots of new people, freelancers. It gave me a sense of belief that *I could* do it too.

What is your advice for women who want to start a creative business or pursue a career in the create industry?

It would be great to just say follow your dreams and passions, do the things that are going to make you happy, and that of course is a big reason for making change in your life. Start small, produce work that is uniquely yours and capture your work and share your ideas with other creative networks and find your tribe, it’ll build up your confidence as you find an audience for your work.
